It is not often that coin collecting makes the news but this week it was reported that a British coin sold for a million pounds. Should you be checking your change or digging out that jar of of old holiday money?
This was a very special coin as it was a gold sovereign minted in 1936 with the head of Edward VIII. The Royal Mint produced 6 trial strikes but before full production could start Edward abdicated so no further coins were made.
If you are willing to set your financial goals a little lower you may be able to find Edward VIII coins in collection of old coins as some were issued in the the British Empire colonies. British West Africa, East Africa (see picture of 10 Cents), New Guinea and Fiji all issued coins for Edward VIII but all are designed with a centre hole so have his name only but no head. These may have an interesting story but none are scarce enough to be valuable.
Can't find any of these? We still exchange old holiday money and other coins and banknotes through the Foreign Money Exchange website.
